Pokemon Legends: Arceus offers us an opportunity to get up close and personal to the Pokemon within the Hisui region. While you catch or battle new wild creatures, you will also have the chance to feed them a variety of different items, ranging from simple berries to rice cakes.

In this guide, we are going to go over everything you need to know about feeding Pokemon. This will include which ones can be fed, as well as what items you can feed to them. First, let's take a look at what Pokemon you are able to feed.

Can You Feed Your Own Pokemon?

Unfortunately, you will not be able to feed your own Pokemon. Once they have been captured, you will not be able to give them any food.

Keep this in mind if you are working on research tasks that involve feeding. Some Pokemon, such as Swinub, have a research task requiring you to feed them. This cannot be completed on your own Pokemon; you will have to venture out into the Hisui region and find wild ones.

What Does Feeding A Pokemon Do?

In addition to feeding a Pokemon to complete research tasks, you can increase your chances of catching them.

When you successfully feed a Pokemon, their guard will go down. This allows you to throw a Pokeball with a higher chance of successfully capturing them. Additionally, you can get closer to throw Heavy Ball varieties when a Pokemon is eating food.

Throwing Food

Throwing food is pretty simple, but there are some things that you should keep in mind.

Firstly, do not hit the Pokemon with the food that you are throwing. This will cause Pokemon with a docile or skittish temperament to run away from you. If you throw food directly at an aggressive Pokemon, they will be unable to be captured, and run to attack you. Overall, try not to hit Pokemon.

To throw food, aim with ZR until you are lined up with a Pokemon that you want to feed. Once you find your Pokemon of choice, throw the food around them by releasing ZR. The food will bounce around a little, and the Pokemon will run up to eat it.

Pokemon Favorite Foods

Shinx's Favorite Foods

Much like people, Pokemon have food preferences. You are more than welcome to toss out any food to a Pokemon, but they may completely ignore it. Because of this, you should try to feed a Pokemon something that they like.

This information can be found in the Pokedex. For example, on Shinx's Pokedex page, you can see that they like Plump Beans. Therefore, to feed a wild Shinx, you can throw out a Plump Bean.

Lure Cakes

In addition to raw foods that you can gather to throw at Pokemon, you can also feed them Lure Cakes. These are crafted items used to lure specific types of Pokemon. To make one, you will need to combine a food item with the Cake-Lure Base.

Cake-Lure Bases can be purchased from the following three vendors.

  • General Store
  • Base Camp Store
  • Craftworks

Each Cake-Lure Base will cost 100 Pokedollars. Once you have a lure, combine it with an item to make a crafted cake. For example, combining a Cake-Lure Base with a Springy Mushroom will result in the Mushroom Cake. This can be used to attract 'monstrous' Pokemon, as well as Dragon-type Pokemon.

Food Types

Now that you know how to feed Pokemon, let's look at all the food options that appear on a Pokedex page.

Keep in mind that there are some Pokemon that like foods that don't mention their type. For example, above we talked about Shinx liking Plump Beans. The in-game description for Plump Beans only mentions Fish and Flying Pokemon, though.

Crunchy Salt Pokemon that appear similar to grass, plants, and minerals.
Dazzling Honey Bug and Fairylike Pokemon.

Throwing Berries

Lastly, you can throw berries at Pokemon. The Pokemon might not respond to the berry, but you may be able to get its attention, similar to how you would with the foods above. Any type of berry that you get from trees can be thrown to wild Pokemon.

That's all there is to know about feeding Pokemon. Don't forget to make some cakes and feed them to wild Pokemon that you meet while exploring!
